Beth Chappell and Shannon McDonald both received a $600 NSF funded scholarship to attend the 18th Annual North American Dendroecological Fieldweek (NADEF), in Apex Mountain, British Columbia, Canada, June 13th through June 21st 2008.

Two Geography graduate students have been honored with prestigious awards for foreign language study:

Lindsay Skog has been selected for a Foreign Language and Area Studies Fellowship to study Tibetan at the University of Wisconsin-Madison this summer.

Joe Narus received a Boren NSEP Fellowship to study
Chinese at Tsinghua University for the 08-09 academic year.

Scott Smith received a SCHOLARLY AND CREATIVE ACTIVITY GRANT FOR UNDERGRADUATES from PSU to work with Dr. Heejun Chang on Multi-scale analysis of water quality in the Willamette River basin. This will help fund research to identify landscape variables affecting regional water quality characteristics at multiple spatial scales using GIS and spatial statistics. Congratulations, Scott!

Deborah Tolman, adjunct faculty in the Geography Department and students Michelle Lasley and Joe Parker have just published a guide created as part of a Natural Resources class:  The Tolman Guide to Green Living in Portland:  Simple Sustainable and Affordable Practices.

It is a do-it-yourself guide to projects that will enhance the sustainability of your home and garden. An article in the May 15th Portland Tribune provides a further description of the guide.
